It's All About Me, the Couch Patatas!

Giddy With Excitement

I just finished watching the Harry Potter Movie at SM IMAX. Its the new IMAX and I must say, I was giddy with excitement. I woke early (earlier for me than usual, 11am) and rushed to SM. When I arrived, there is already a line at the IMAX lane and there is no guarantee that I would be able to watch the movie at IMAX since surely there are reservations made for the movie. When I was at the front of the line, the cashier told me that the next screening is already sold-out, the next after that is not. Then, I saw the seats left. Front seats are for those who want to strain their necks. The next screening was at 8:25 pm and as I scan the seats, lo and behold, there is a seat at the last row. Perfect! I said to myself, sometimes it pays to be alone watching movies at this type of cinema. I paid the cashier and since I was giddy with excitement, I decided to while 8 hours of my time at SM.

I was like a young boy twiddling his fingers trying to figure out where to go. I window shopped, ate lunch, and played games. I even visited the new SM Annex which I can say a far improvement from what it was used to be with good layout of non-food stores on one side and food stores on the other and the 4th and 5th floor was reserved for the former Cyberzone which seemed bigger. I also looked into the Sky Garden which I say is a nice idea but since it gets most of the pollution and heat, I do not recommend it. The Ampitheater was a nice addition to the Sky Garden. However, the garden was just tiny area compared to the whole lot. It was more an additional dining area and party venue than a garden. After walking for almost 5 hours, I decided to enter the IMAX area where a lounge awaits the patrons (though the sofas are not enough for the moviegoers. When the time arrived for them to let us enter the theater, I scrambled and ended up first in line. I said to myself, what do they care? I am climbing to the highest row and it would be best if I go up first.

As I walked my way up, I can't help but remember my first IMAX experience. I sat in the middle rows and have to crane my neck up. It was a waste of money and time (I watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix). I also strained my neck. This time, even if the movie is ain't worth a dime, I won't strain my neck. Despite the 8:25 pm time stamp on my ticket, the movie did not start until it was around 8:40. The reason, there are just a few ushers and they mislabeled the rows. People had a hard time looking for their seats and some just did not look at all. Others were simply late. For that, most were caught unaware that the movie will start. Nevertheless, when the lights were turned off, silence emanated.

In the end, the wait was all worth it! The movie was brilliant and I was more than happy with the outcome. In the end, I was still giddy with excitement when it ended.

*Reminder to all those going to reserved seats cinemas: Please look into your tickets so we won't waste time. In addition, do arrive at least 20 minutes before the time stamp. For cinema owners, please close the door on the latecomers. A movie starting late can sometime ruin the experience.*

MeMay's last event

Since it has been announced, I will blog it. MeMay is leaving us to spend time to fulfill her dream and for me it is the best dream a woman can have. As Sushmita Sen said, this is the essence of being a woman, if I understood it correctly.

July 3 and 4 2009 was the fourth time our team handled the Managers' TB for the unit. The theme was "chillax". This would be the last time we will have heated discussions, arguments, creative inputs, putting forward ideas, etc. Though the event was a success according to the feedback and word of mouth received, the team will still lose a vital cog in our creative and implementations team. MeMay for the past 4 years assisted in ensuring that the logistics of the event went smoothly. She provided her inputs regarding implementations for the production. She is our guide in ensuring necessary technical equipments, materials, props, and other effects are present. Even if we are working in a "non-event production" company, she never forgot her roots. Her suggestion and experience made it easier for us to love this tedious task. Despite the tasks we need to do, the team behind the event was able to chill because she always ensure that we are all "flowing". It is the first event were no hard feelings were displayed. It was truly a fun night.

After the event, I realized that it would be her last with us and it would be a scary thought and scary unknown. Then, I think that what she is doing is for her happiness then we cannot be sad but be happy. As the theme of the teambuilding goes, we need to chillax because we will still be able to meet in different venues and places. After all, our team knows the meaning of "chill".

I Heart Baguio!

4 Baguio trips in 6 months...I truly heart Baguio. People wonder why we go there and what we do there. My common reply, I go to SM, hang-out at Starbucks, window shop and shop, do groceries and watch a movie. Their common retort, "as if you can't do that here in Manila". My reply, in Baguio, the climate is amazing that you can walk to places, the fare is cheap and you do all these things without worrying about time. No matter what, I truly heart Baguio and so are my kaladmates.

First Baguio Trip: Jan 30 to Feb 2

This is the first "kalad". Ros, ZsaZsa, Jaymee, Ken and Jen were my "kaladmates". We stayed in Tahak este Tacay Road. The place is near SM (that is if you know how to air-walk). True, "abot-tanaw ang SM" but it takes 70 pesos via taxi to reach it (by Baguio fare standard - it is a bit far). I thank my sister for recommending the place. Great! Do I recommend the place? The house is beautiful with cute Shih Tzu smelling the basement rooms. The house is undergoing construction. The basement has a sliding door that when you try to open and put one step forward will mean that you fall two stories to the ground with rocks and iron that could mean death.

For photos, videos, and other fun things done during the first trip visit Ros' site: http://rowzhie.multiply.com/photos/album/15/Baguio_Escape

Second Baguio Trip: Mar 13 to Mar 16

My second Baguio Trip was our out of town gift to my parents who have been married for 29 years. Since all of us are working, we decided that it is time that we go out of town. Our first for a very long time. Despite getting sick during this trip, I know that my parents had fun. We stayed at the attic part of the Tacay house so the dog smell was very minimal and it is still a beautiful house.

For photos of this trip, check it out at: http://jeprox254ever.multiply.com/photos/album/8/Baguio_Trip_2

Third Baguio Trip: May 30 to Jun 1

I would like to thank my ever Baguio kaladmates Ros and ZsaZsa for this wonderful trip. It is forever etched in my heart. Thank you for celebrating my birthday there. That cake was a surprise.

Some photos can be seen at: http://rowzhie.multiply.com/photos/album/37/Baguio_Trip_w_friends_05.30-06.01

This trip happened because my Aunt Lorraine wanted to go to Baguio so that my cousin Sheryl would be able to visit the place. The trip was booked as early as April. We will be staying at Greenwater Village. The place is nearer than Tacay to the city proper. The house was smaller though but it fits 9 people. My sister brought with her Dayos and Red while ZsaZsa and Ros was with me. My brother Kel also joined us to this trip by filing a leave. Afterall, this is a trip for my birthday. Jen was supposed to go with us but things crop up. These thing is called "Work!". ZsaZsa was supposed to bring Alex but she got sick the last minute and had to back-out. Alex and Jen will join my fourth trip and third with ZsaZsa and Alex.

Our companions during the third trip:

Aunt Lorraine and Sheryl

Sheryl really cracked ZsaZsa up. It was her first trip but hopefully it would not be her last. She loved creating "smoke" out of her mouth. She experienced her frist "grilled bonfire". It was raining so we cannot make our own bonfire. We used the one for the grill instead. Instead of charcoal, we used firewood. After an arduous 30 minutes, the fire kept roaring and we were able to make smores using grilled marshmallows and ate grilled Bibbo hotdog. While we are doing this, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" was playing on the background. Check out Ros' site for the delicious pictures of our successful(?) "bonfire".

Clockwise: Dayos, Mai, ZsaZsa, Sheryl, Jp, Aunt Lorraine, Red, Ros, and Kel

Fourth Baguio Trip: June 12 to June 15

Ros has already posted photos for this trip so I am going to redirect you again to her site. Our fourth Baguio trip came at the heels of the third one. I wasn't planning to go because successive trips can be a drain on the pocket but what the heck, the payroll team decided to give our salaries 4 days early so Baguio here I come again. With its perfect weather, despite the rain, Baguio weather is amazing that you will fall in love with it. After a year, I will visit the beautiful places again. The gang was composed of Alex, Jen, ZsaZsa, Ros, Jp, Jaymee, Dayos and Red. Alex, ZsaZsa, Ros and I went to Camp John Hay and visited the Historical site, travelled to the Secret Garden (becoming more of a garden now), and walked down to 8 Mile Hi before dining at 50's Diner. We also visited Mines View for a dose of shopping (Alex actually did the shopping while I ate tira-tira and ice cream). On the last day, we went to Good Shepherd and Burnham Park where we ate at the famous grill spots beside the park (in short sa turo-turo kami kumain).

The group stayed at Balsigan. This is near the Petron station where Pancake House is located. Breakfast at Pancake House is always divine. At home, the group had a Uno Stack-o contest with the loser drinking wine. It was a fun trip.

The weather, the place, the transient houses, the travel, the bibbo hotdogs, the coffee, and the dining areas make Baguio one of a kind. Nature, food, relaxation...ahhh...I truly heart Baguio!

See you in our next travel to the City of Pines!

Short Stories

A friend of mine requested me to review her work, before I review it. Let me share it with you. I am not sure if she wants this shared, nevertheless, here it go. The title of the work is called Ophelia's Strain. This work an example of an egotistical sublime. Egotistical sublime is a style where the author puts part of their psyche into their work. I changed her real name to how we call her. I hope you enjoy this story and I hope I do justice to the review.

OPHELIA’S STRAIN
by Ouine
The Homecoming
“Beatrice Alexandria! My! THIS is unexpected?”

I rolled my eyes, shook my head and smirked at Yaya Caring’s greeting as she opened the enormous, steel front gate.

“Am I not even welcomed at my own house?” I scowled at Yaya Caring as I stepped into the ancestral home I once taken for granted.

“Hang on tiger, I meant nothing ill about that!” Yaya Caring said defensively, as she held both her hands up in front of her, that her plump fingers were enough to protect her from me. “It’s just so funny how you’ve always told me that you wanted to leave this place, and now all of sudden you’re here? What happened to the ‘conjugal haven’ you and Dave are sharing?”

“Don’t use that word, Yaya,” I told her as I picked up my bag and slumped it on my right shoulder, “It stings my ears!”

“Which one, ‘conjugal’ or ‘Dave?’”

I shook my head, stormed passed her, as she continued to call after me. “What happened to you and Dave? Did you two have a fight or something? You two were always inseparable!”
I stopped dead in my tracks. That was then, this is now! I wanted to scream back, instead, I dropped my head, clenched my free hand into a tight fist and without looking at her, I warned her in a low voice, “Don’t start with me. You know what happens when I’m not in the mood.”

Fuming inside, I continued to stomp my way across the manicured lawn that my Abu kept tidy during her Sunday visits. “Hey, Alex! The lawn!” Yaya Caring reminded in a tender tone. “You know how your Abu would have a fit, if she sees that the greens have been messed-up!”

I stopped for a moment, shook my head and then continued trudging towards our house.
“Isn’t it too early for Halloween?” I said as I entered the front door of our split-level house. “Ate Alex!”

Clackety, Clackety, Clackety, went the sound of the heel of Dawn’s leather boots against the marble floor, as she bounced her way towards my direction. How she did that is not a mystery anymore. Considering her petite frame, and the fact that she practically had been wearing boots since she discovered them, Dawn can do cartwheels in them for all she cares. In fact, she has been doing a lot of things that everybody in the family has learned to reluctantly accept, such as her Wiccan-inspired wardrobe and weird hairstyle (long bangs with white and red streaks, with a shaven part behind her left ear).

“So, have you decided you’d do it?” she asked me earnestly.
“That’s actually one of the things I need to talked to her about.” I told my younger sister.
“Why? What’s wrong?” Dawn asked. “Is this something to do with Dave? I’ve heard Itay and Inay saying you’re staying over? What gives?”
I raised one eyebrow and glared at Dawn that told her that this is not one of those days that I want to answer her 20-questions. My mind had been convoluted with ideas these past nights, that I have no plans of talking about my turmoil – not yet anyway.
“What do you know so far?”
“Nothing…much, really” Dawn said, as she shrugged her shoulders and walked towards the front door. As she reached for the knob, she faced me and said.
“I just overheard Itay and Inay talking about you and Dave having some glitches and that you’re coming over to stay for a few days.”
“Do any of you know EXACTLY the cause of this dissension?” I asked in alarm.
“Neither Eli and I knows what’s going on, Eli, especially.” Dawn said. “He seems to be living on some distant planet far from Earth. I swear he’ll be coming out of the closet pretty soon if he continues to do theater.”
“You’re stereotyping, you know that,” I pointed out then sighed, “Well, at least he does not have a flat personality like me. Let’s give him credit for that.”
“You’re not flat Ate, you’ve got talent!” Dawn assured me. “Mine is in Visual Arts and drums. Eli is in Performing Arts and guitar, while you, you have Inay’s knack for writing.”
“I m sorry but I don’t share your optimism,” I confessed, “nor do I have the heart to do the biography.”
“But it’s for Inay,” Dawn reasoned.
“You promised! A lot of people are expecting you to write it! Don’t worry I’m with you. If you’re scared about criticisms, I’m here. We’ll be both criticized for it. We’re both her daughters and we’re both part of the project. The only difference is that I do the photo stills while you do the writing. I cannot promise that I’m the best but I know I will do my best. Come on, Ate. You can’t back out now. Why are you turning everybody down? First Dave, now Inay…
“I’m not…hey, what do you mean by…who…Dawn…you said…”
“Uhmm…I have to go to the bookstore to buy some Art materials. Bye!”
And before I could say, will-o-wisp, Dawn was gone.

Time must have flown so fast, since the time I spoke with Dawn. I found myself in the backyard tree house rummaging my treasure chest filled with childhood playthings searching for something, until I found it…and she also found me.

Pandora’s Box
I saw her crying at the tree house where her childhood dreams once found its home. She held my wedding gown in her arms, cradling it like it was her baby that lost ITS life. Then again I was not far from the truth.

My Alex, my eldest, was kneeling on the tree house’s floor, were all her sentimental mementos from her dusty, but well-kept wooden trunk were strewn all over the place. She was in her own private reverie when I arrived. Knowing what had transpired the past few days in her life, the sight was unbearable seeing her in such a miserable state.

The childhood tree house seemed so cramped now, compared to the last time I was there – the time I yearned to see Alex back, the first night she left the house and tried to have her independence. I wanted my baby back, but not like this, not in this state.

Wiping her tears with the back of her hand, she took my hand for me to bless it. “Nostalgia…” she said with a half-smile, Alex turned her back from me and began clearing out her mess. I remember when she was about fourteen when she pranced across the sala holding my wedding gown and telling my husband and I that she met the person she wanted to be with the rest of her life – and 14 years later, she refused to fulfill that dream to the same boy who now grew-up.
“Fairy tales,” she said, as if reading my mind. “He told you didn’t he?
“Yes,” I told her as I looked down on the floor. “He went here the night he proposed to you and the same night you turned him down,” I began. “I don’t understand, Alex. What irreconcilable differences were you talking about?”
“How the fire spreads fast,” Alex said rolling her eyes and shaking her head. Turning her back from me. “He just can’t keep his mouth shut even just for awhile.”
“Well, it’s a natural course for him to take, considering he asked me and your dad permission to marry you,” I told her. “That was the day before he bought your engagement ring and the week before he proposed to you. It seems natural for him to tell your father and I what happened.
“Alex, you’ve known each other since you were fourteen and you even told me, yourself, at that very young age that he IS the one for you,” I reminded her. “You knew! From the moment you meant him, that he is the right one for you! Now that the opportunity presented itself you’re backing out? Why?”
“Ahhh, one of the mysteries world,” she told me as she threw her arms in the air, “I don’t know, maybe I’m just the anti-bride type of woman I guess. Maybe I’m just not prepared.”
“Not prepared?” I asked incredulously. “You are a Manager in our family’s thriving Events Planning Company. You’re twenty-eight and have finished your studies. What are you scared of?”
“You know what, don’t give me that ‘holier than thou’ attitude,” her voice began to rise. “I’m just starting my life, having my own freedom so, please, please don’t try to tell me what I can and cannot do.”
“What are you talking about?” I know there was more to this, and before I could stop myself, I continued to prod the vulnerable, fragile and invisible shell, she was protecting herself with. “What are you scared of? Where is this fear coming from?”
“All my life, you enrolled me to different schools from ballet, to jazz classes, to Art and to god knows what,” she began her litany. “And for what? What had this brought me? Misery! Misery knowing that you have to shove right to my face, that I am as ordinary as the girl next door and far from my ever talented and famous mother!”
“I know I’ve been a disappointment to you and to everyone from the moment I was born,” she continued, “I know I never surmounted into anything artistic and intellectual unlike my two siblings or my cousins. All my life I’m left with knowing I’ve always failed all of you, and am nothing but a mediocre reproduction of you that even the title of being your shadow is something I don’t deserve. That being said, I refuse to do your biography, find some other writer. And to hell with Dave, let him find another wife!
“I love Dave, don’t get me wrong,” she continued. “And who wouldn’t want to have children with him. But I’m scared of a commitment that I may not be able to fulfill in the very end because I’ve always been not good enough. I’ve been living with Dave yes, but at least there are no strings that are too attached that would make me ruin his life and our children in the end.”
“Why are you saying this,” I asked her. “I never expected anything from you. I enrolled you to different classes for you to find yourself and not to fulfill my dreams. My only dream for you is that you find yours before it is too late. I gave you the opportunities I never had when I was young but I never forced you to continue something you don’t want to do.
“I wanted you to do my biography not to show off but because I know you could do it and I wanted you to finally use your literary wings and fly. But besides that, I wanted you to know that I too can bleed and that I’m also hopelessly flawed. I care what you only think of yourself because for me you and your siblings will always be greatness in my eyes. I gave you names - Beatrice Alexandria, Dawn Ekaterina, and Ethan Eleassar to show the grandeur and beauty of your souls. A tough act maybe but I as a mother I simply know that from the moment each of you were born you’re the best miracles of my life – no matter what.
“Don’t marry Dave, Alex,” I told her as I cupped my hands under her face now brimming with tears. “If you don’t love him. But do not refuse if you’re only reason is that you think you don’t deserve him. Alex, he loves and chose you that way you love and chose him that afternoon you held this wedding gown. Do not be afraid. You deserve to be happy.”

Introducing 2009

People makes resolution at the start of the year but I do not go for it. I will not make one. What I will make is a list of what I need to accomplish for this blog. It is not a resolution like eat less, go on low salt diet...etc...though I really need to undergo weight management, reduction, and the whole she-bang. This is not part of this introduction.

However, here is the list of what I have to do so far:

1. Provide some pictures for the Boracay Virgin article (long overdue)
2. Create three articles dedicated to our Year End Party production:

a. Director's Cut
b. Production Notes
c. Victory Party

Beware, pictures are not for younger people and hopefully I can stop it from being downloaded.

I will do my best of placing the video of the performance.

3. Create DVD Reviews for the following movies:

a. The Departed
b. Hellboy
c. Cloverfield
d. 27 Dresses
e. Tokyo Drift (The Fast and The Furious 3)
f. Hairspray
g. Chicago
h. Cars
i. Ironman

4. Create a Review for Ouine's short story and share it with you

5. Create a Review for the movies:

a. Twilight
b. MMFF movie

6. Rant about the following:

a. Work
b. Charter Change
c. Philippine Economy
d. Apartheid

7. Buy DVDs of the following:

a. Dark Knight
b. Knocked Up
c. Rachel Getting Married
d. Curious Case of Benjamin Button
e. Indiana Jones
f. Twilight
g. High School Musical 3
h. Slumdog Millionaire
i. Milk
j. Doubt
k. Eagle Eye

Do the review once I have them.

8. Try buying some classic movies on DVD and do a review of them and do a review of DVDs purchased as the year move along.

9. Learn other blogging stuff to improve the blog...

Have fun reading the posts as I have fun writing them...Happy New Year!

Being A Couch Potato (or not)

I am a certified couch potato. I may not have paid attention to this blog and everything is intermittent but I would definitely like to start anew and provide you with things related to the couch and a few in between.

Let us define first what for me is a couch potato:

A couch potato is someone who liked to become idle. However, I am not totally idle. My being a couch potato or more aptly bed potato (I love sleeping and doing things you normally do on a couch, I do them on a bed). What do I do at my room most of the time:

1. Read a book
2. Watch TV
3. Watch DVD
4. Work at Home

The last item is not typically an activity by a couch potato but to hell with it. I sometimes work at home for the fun of it (I can see you rolling your eyes, quit it).

So, what can you expect from me and this blog.

1. Book review (most likely a book I read)

How I gauge it? I gauge it based on whether I will continue buying from that author or borrow first before I buy. If there are no other books from that author, I will do my best to tell how it really is.

2. DVD review (DVDs I have and will buy)

A piece of note here: I review if a DVD is worth buying based on the following:

a. Expected features must be there, Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel, Theatrical Trailers and/or TV Spots, at least one how the movie was made documentary

b. Other features - documentaries about the film, interview with the cast, feature layout, etc

c. The movie itself - I hate creating synopsis so expect that it would be few even if I loved the movie. The synopsis, funny moments, great moments, and the likes can be seen on DVD reviews with nothing but the movie on it and very few other features.

The most important aspect on how I feel if a DVD is worth buying would be the Features unless the movie is so exceptional it trumps the Features. After all, it is a DVD. Just buy VHS or VCD if we are after the movie.

3. Since it is after all about me, work, vacations, family bonding, bumming around would be a great part of what I write. Other articles are written depending on interest. Some that interests me are the economic meltdown, Philippine politics, and currently discrimination. There is a new target for discrimination so I will do some research before I lay out my mind. If I do not have time to research, I will speak my mind (shooting and spitting out nonsense most likely)

I hope you enjoy reading. The posts are subject to author's rights and copyright. If you find the articles, posts, and rants helpful, remember to cite where it came from.

Lastly, Happy New Year to Everyone!

Work Cut Out

I thought July would be the only month where I would be busy. August came and I thought it would be the busiest month. September came and I said I feel I can relax. True enough, September was a breather. It was the silence before the plunge. I wasted it.

I was able to go on a vacation but it was just not enough. Fortunately, I have learned new things from the training I went through because July and August are not in the same league as October. It will not be in the same league as November. Work seems to be the primary force in my life. The good thing about it is, for me, work is fun and I strongly believe that despite the number of things needed to be accomplished, it is good for me and the people around me.

Indulge me as I rant through the reality of my the action items I need to accomplish at work.

1. Transition - I believe change is good. It creates an opportunity to flesh out new ideas. However, this is a first for me. The first to think how I can make it easier for everyone when new gears are in place. This creates sleepless nights and brain stress.

2. Theartics - I need to help out in a project involving theatrics. I was into theater when I was younger and had experiences. Though not full blown, the mere fact that I there is an expectation is just so fearful especially when in the end, after all the effort and hardwork, the outcome is not in your hand. It is in the taste of the people who will judge it.

3. Organizing - One of the activities I love doing but add this with the theatric stuff, it will take a toll. One of the main item I have to deliver is a video. Sounds easy, but with the marketing campaign being part of it, it sure is not easy.

4. Projects - Managing a group people with diverse personality, needs, and work attitude is a good excercise for the brain and the emotion. With three deliverables before end of year, it is surely going to be a hell of a ride. Projects are related to infrastructure for the unit, people, system, and process.

5. Initiative - Since a new year is in the horizon, we are gearing for the initiative planning. With things not yet in place at the top tier, we have to wait and see what are the important needs of the client before being able to create our own plans. Once they are done, performance measures and reward systems must be tied to it.

Boracay Virgin

I admit I am a Boracay Virgin. There, I said it. Good thing, I was not alone. Jen and Fred were “virgins” as well so to speak. As a newbie in Boracay, you can only get tips and advices from those who were there before you. Luckily, we did not follow those advices. We went our own way.

This trip started when Jen was not able to join Baguio because of a baptism. We admonished her for not making the trip and to make amends Jen proposed a different travel on another date. The question was…when would we do it? While waiting for the meeting to resume, Maris declared September and we agreed. We are not going to do a Baguio repeat. Boracay and Hong Kong cropped up. I said, I’d rather go within the country first than outside the country (I am patriotic, whatever! Real reason: Passport not processed yet).

It was decided that we were going to Boracay and Jen mentioned that she would be with Ken and Fred. On September 19, 2008, everything was set for our Boracay get-away. Fred and I were introduced for the first time (though I see him at work since his office is near our Boss’ office). Once Maris and Rex arrived, off we go to the airport. In the excitement (I am a Boracay virgin), we arrived early (I bugged them to make an early call time). Without anything in mind, not knowing what it will offer (aside from the normal water sports --- again virgin who did not ask for any advice), we trekked to the airport 2 hours early. The plane boarded on time but there were late passengers. The nerve of these people trying to ruin my Boracay escapade (at this point I was pissed --- virgin excitement draining away). Despite the late departure, we arrived at Caticlan 5 minutes early, great pilot!

Arriving at Caticlan made me giddy with excitement (well, Jen was also excited). The problem was…where was the forsaken hotel personnel that would help with the transfer? It took us about 10 minutes after exiting the airport before we saw him. How can you see him? The name Jen Tan was written in font size 10 on a whiteboard along with several other names. As we sat on the van, we started planning. What would we do? Where would we go? As we settled down, we were still thinking what we wanted to do first. The first thing that came into my mind was, sleep! Great, isn’t it? What a way to waste my first time? I kept my mouth shut. Maris wanted to shop and Jen agreed. We ate lunch and rested for a few minutes before we sauntered off experiencing the sun, wind, and sea breeze (it was not a breeze it is a very strong breeze like a typhoon is hitting the shores). The trek to D’Mall was eventful. We got more than 10 offers of anything we can do and anything we can buy. As we kept walking, Jonah’s was mentioned where great shakes can be found. Where was it located? Ken said, “Station 1”. I replied, okay. Truly, it is classic response from a Boracay virgin. Instead of asking how far, I went along for the ride, I meant the walk. Not fond of walking, it could have been the longest walk of my life, a peaceful, serene, and feeling the nature type of walk. I loved it. With sunblock and all, I stared at the mighty sun and walked without abandon until I realized my feet were hurting. I am after all human.

Jonah’s was almost at the far end of Station 1. They served shakes. We ordered Papaya Melon for Ken, Choco Peanut for Jen (or was it Fred or Maris), Banana Choco Peanut for Fred (or was it Maris or Jen), Banana Choco for Maris (or was it Fred or Jen), Banana Mocha (for Rex), and Mocha Rhum for me (I drink, no biggie). The drink woke me up and made me tipsy. It was a potent combination. For the rest of the drinks, Banana Mocha got a very bad grade. They did not mix well (I am thinking it has something to do with density). The mocha was at the top while the banana remained at the bottom. Nevertheless, it was invigorating. After the drinks, we made our way to the grotto. Jen clamored for this. No Boracay virgin should miss the grotto, it seems this grotto makes everything there boom. It was definitely serene. Mind you, 6 people are enough on that small of a ledge.

As we tried to settle in on the great island (we walked back to Station 2), a great weekend started. Since it is the beach, a tan (not Jen mind you) would be a great reminder for weeks to come. As we lay on the beach to do just that, the masseurs started arriving. This is nothing new but I still want to point out that a massage on the beach where a strong breeze, a very strong breeze is blowing is absolutely relaxing. I slept (thank God since I only had two hours of it)! The evening would be a waste if we do not try the famous Boracay night life. As we strolled on the beach, a craving came about. The search for the best Isaw on the beach was on. The first Isaw stand we saw was the one near the police station. Manang made a great sauce and the marinade was very good it gives the Isaw a spicy taste. On to the next stand, the next stand was ok but was not remembering. The third stand was near D’mall already. It was near the shop that sells rock-n-roll crepes. It gives discount coupons for the Isaw you eat. This is good for the crepe shop. What a way to bribe us? The best Isaw, Manang near the police station in Station 2. If you are there, find her. To cap the night off, Fred displayed his bartending skills as he asked us the bar to concoct certain drinks. The amaretto drink was soothing and the drink with the grenadine was absolutely great. They hit the mark as Fred described it. Even Maris, who does not drink, liked the drinks. The night was spent discussing mundane things and drinking the night away. We called in early since we have a hectic second day ahead of us.

The hectic day included Island Hopping (1500 for the boat for 4 hours) which I am sure the normal thing for normal people. Nevertheless, I am still describing it since we did something not normal; we stayed at a deserted beach area. Despite the clusters of sea urchin, we swam and bathed there since the water was so cool and refreshing. There was a dilapidated resort that was for sale and the only thing I can say was, whoever will buy it is crazy. The place is called Ilig-iligan beach. During the boat ride, because that was what we did, I noticed that the water sports station was transferred far from the beach front of White Beach. We concluded that the waters are calmer in the said area compared to White Beach. We were thinking that the waters are calmer, on White Beach, during the peak season (summer). If you are into water sports but you do not want to stray away, go during the peak season. However, if you are saving, go during the off-peak season and you can do the water sports at a cheaper rate. It would be more adventurous because the area is farther and the sea floor is deeper.

The highlight of our second day is the ATV. The ATV is like a small tractor slash golf cart. The ride was amazing since you get to drive to Mount Luho and as much rough road you can get. In order to ride the ATV, you must get out of the beach area and ride a tricycle to the far ends of Station 1. Just get a guide to guide you to the place. Nope, you will not enter Station 1 again. With the ATV (which they price at PHP600 during this time --- PHP2000 during peak season), you ride it to Mount Luho with your guide. At Mount Luho, you can see the pristine view of the island. It is just amazing. It was surreal but great. Jen even made a friend here, her name was MaiMai. The trip to Mount Luho was definitely different or it was the Boracay virgin in me that thought Boracay was all beaches.

After that trek, we were exhausted and raring to have dinner. Since it was our last night, the group decided to eat seafood (why not, we are at the seaside after all). We made our way to the talipapa area and purchased seafood. Crabs, oysters, prawns, fish, and lobster cooked in different ways. From sinigang, to buttered prawns, crabs in chili sauce, baked oysters, grilled tuna, and Jen even made another friend, the Lobster shell. Since it was Saturday night, the group decided to chill and have fun. Lo and behold, Mother Nature unleashed a rainy night. After eating, the group just decided to have another massage. This time it was at the comfort of our rooms. What a classic, room service. Despite the rainy Saturday night our trip was a complete and utter success, it was fun and it was adventurous. We got to see sights outside of the beach and we got to see how Boracay became a global tourist destination. Arriving safely in Manila, we plan our next adventure. Two places were presented to the table, Hong Kong and another dose of an exhilarating Boracay adventure. By then, I would no longer be a Boracay virgin.

Trying to be adventurous at Boracay, here are some things that can help along the way:

1. Plan your trip around September (chances of being stormed in is high --- adventure isn’t it)
2. Pack light (Jen is an exception)
2. Prepare clothing for an ATV adventure
3. Wanting to get a tan, use Hawaiian Tropics (not the local products sold at Bora). It would be best if you bring it.
4. Exercise before you leave (try walking for a mile in Manila and I bet that you will enjoy the serene walks at Bora) otherwise just get a massage there.
5. Bring extra cash to try the very luxurious spa around (after all, it is supposed to be a vacation)
6. Go rent an ATV --- go friggin’ rent an ATV. (Experience the cruise control)
7. If you are really adventurous, bring further extra cash and do some water sports. (Plan at least a 4-day vacation for this)
8. If you want to party, hmmm…, pray there is a party going on at any of the Stations --- better yet, pray it is not raining.

Until the next virgin voyage, I am signing off.

3 Years of STEAM Part I

Transformation, according to Dictionary.com (using the American Heritage Dictionary's second meaning) means a marked change, as in appearance or character, usually for the better.

Our team underwent several transformations. Though, technically, people left the company and were replaced, I still would say that those changes were transformation. It was a marked change for the remaining members because it allowed us to make the most out of it. It also allowed us to ensure that the team move forward. Change is for the better.

From September 2005 to April 2006, this is STEAM batch 1.

From May 2006 to Dec 2007, STEAM underwent rigorous change.

Karla left, then Stef, then Berns...so we welcomed Maneelene, Dominic, and Norman while Erman and Rupher transferred, Kaila and Me-ann took over. Middle of 2007 saw Rey leaving the team and Darren transferring to another group...Claire and Maris enter. 2007 was supposed to end with Mark, MeMay, JP, Julie as the surviving members with the support from Maneelene, Dominic and Norman who entered middle of 06 while Kaila and Me-ann entered latter part of 06. However, Kaila decided to move on at the end of 07 so we have to find a replacement fast.

It's 2008. After Kaila, Darwin arrived. It is September and we will be celebrating our 3rd year in existence. Imagine, we are 3 years old. Definitely, we are toddlers. As toddlers, we are still capable of learning as long as our bodies and minds yearn for it. This is the new look of STEAM after 3 years. We are definitely transformed but we are not mature yet. We are a sapling to a tree.
